One, it turns out, isn’t the loneliest number.
Just ask Chuck Negron.
It was Negron, Danny Hutton and Cory Wells who took “Three Dog Night” to the top of the pop charts in the late 1960s and early 1970s with 21 Top 40 tunes.

“Prayer for the Children” an acapella piece Three Dog Night put into their encore performance at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre.
"What I love about that song is that it’s a new song. It probably gets the best reaction of every song we’ve done, and that’s a big deal,” said Danny Hutton, singer and one of the founding members of Three Dog Night. "We had 21 hits in a row and more people when we get off stage say ‘What what that new song you did?’”

The feat would be impossible to achieve in today’s market-fragmented world, but back in ’71, the bell-bottomed-and-walrus-mustachioed anthem “Joy To The World,” by Three Dog Night, shone through the polluted air and permeated the culture. In a world already torn every which way but loose, Jeremiah the bullfrog and the wine we helped him drink were on the lips of all the boys and girls now.

Three Dog Night is an American rock band formed in 1967, with founding members consisting of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. The name Three Dog Night was coined from the Australian expression of it being so cold that you would need to sleep with three dogs as opposed to one.

The Los Angeles trio (as they originally were) became the talk of the industry soon after their 1967 formation, initially under the name Redwood. After signing to ABC/Dunhill and releasing their self-titled debut LP in late 1968, there was no stopping them.

Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. While often criticized as commercial, the band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson (“One”), Laura Nyro (“Eli’s Coming”), Randy Newman (“Mama Told Me (Not to Come)”), Hoyt Axton (“Joy to the World”), Argent’s Russ Ballard (“Liar”), and Leo Sayer (“The Show Must Go On”). Wells and Hutton met in the ’60s while the former was the lead singer of the Enemies and the latter, a writer/producer for Hanna Barbera Records who had recorded several singles, served as producer.

From the top, Negron would hit rock bottom, figuring he did stints in 37 rehab centers and multiple stints in more than one center. Finally, it took in September, 1991. Eight years later, he wrote “Three Dog Nightmare,” with a revised version released this year.
