Metallica announced on Friday that it has officially left its longtime home, the Warner Music Group, taken its master recordings and formed a new independent label, Blackened Recordings. All forthcoming Metallica projects -- including future studio albums, reissues, live recordings and long- and short-form video work -- will come out via Blackened. The label will also handle its own marketing and promotion, and be distributed by WMG reissue subsidiary Rhino Entertainment. The timing of the announcement is notable. Under an agreement that Metallica signed in 1994, when the band was at the peak of its commercial powers and the phrase "illegal downloading" sounded more like trucker slang than a music biz concern, the band negotiated that ownership of all of its master recordings would revert to them on Nov. 30, 2012. That day has come. (SOURCE: LA Times )

Green Day was forced to pull out of the festival due to Billie Joe Armstrong checking into rehab. "We discussed it between the four of us and we all said, 'Yeah,'" said Hammett. "It would be a great thing for us to do and it would also be great to help out Billie Joe because he's a friend of ours and we love Green Day. If we can help them out in any way possible, we're always happy to do it because we love those guys." (SOURCE: 411 Mania )

Called the Orion Music & More Festival in honor of the band’s late bassist Cliff Burton, (whose most memorable musical expression is thought by Metallica to reside in the track "Orion" off Master of Puppets) the festival will be a two-day event that Metallica will headline both days, planning to cover one of their classic albums in its entirety each night. Adding a bit of eclecticism to their festival, Metallica has handpicked more than 20 other musical acts to perform at the festival, including Modest Mouse, Best Coast and Fucked Up. The fest is scheduled for June 23 and 24 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (SOURCE: TG Daily )
