The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine (1967, Stereo)
1967... #1 US Billboard Hot 100 #1 US Cash Box 100 #1 Canada Top Singles #2 Australian Charts #3 New Zealand Charts #7 UK Singles Chart.. Green Tambourine tells the story of a young busker or street musician who is prepared to play any song on his green tambourine in order to earn a few pennies. The Indian tones and haunting sitar music playing in the background gave the song a special atmosphere which obviously captured the imagination of the record buying public of the time. The vocals are accentuated by a heavily emphasized tape echo every time the word play appears. The Lemon Pipers would never repeat their success with Green Tambourine and pretty soon after went their separate ways. |
Before “Green Tambourine,” their main claim to fame is that they’d lost to Joe Walsh’s James Gang in a battle-of-the-bands final at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in 1967. Their first few singles did nothing, then the record label got them to record ‘Green Tambourine’. They were not happy with the song but reluctantly recorded it. It would get to number 1 in the US and Canada and peak at 7 in the UK. They managed a couple of further hits with ‘Rice Is Nice’ going to 46 in the US and 41 in the UK and ‘Jelly Jungle (Of Orange Marmalade)’ getting to 51 in the US but disbanded soon after this
Feb 1968: Lemon Pipers first LP "Green Tambourine" was released. "Turn Around Take a Look" and "Green Tambourine" were released as singles in advance of the album. "Rice is Nice" was released by Buddah as a single after the album's release.
