12.24.12: Jeff Lynne's Long Wave
Jeff Lynne has fronted a couple of bands: the Move and, more successfully, Electric Light Orchestra. He also played with the all-star Traveling Wilburys. Truth be told, though, Lynne feels more comfortable behind the scenes, producing for the likes of Ringo Starr; Joe Walsh; fellow Wilburys George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty; and — oh, yeah — the Beatles, on The Beatles Anthology (1995). Now, with two new albums this fall and a documentary — all of which explore his musical past — and with plans for more work bearing his name in the near future, the 64-year-old is happily back in the spotlight. “I’ve never had more fun in the studio than I have the last couple of years,” the British-born musician said by phone from Los Angeles, where he now lives. “It’s just been a pleasure.” Lynne’s recent albums, Long Wave and Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra, revisit different aspects of his heritage. Long Wave harks back to his youth with covers of his favorite pop standards, including Mercy Mercy; Smile; and Love Is a Many- Splendored Thing. “ Long Wave is just a labor of love, really,” Lynne said. “I just had to do them. It was an urge I had in the last few years. I really wanted to do some of these classic songs and just learn how they all went, and just learning them was a real treat.” (SOURCE: Columbia Dispatch)
12.06.12: Montreal Gazzette New Music review: Long Wave
Long Wave shows Lynne fondly paying tribute to the songs that shaped him. In remaking the likes of If I Loved You and Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered in his own musical image, he has accomplished what few of his standards-covering contemporaries have managed: made the originals beside the point. If singers like Ella Fitzgerald and BIng Crosby have already tackled the Richard Rogers songs you’re taking a whack at, or Roy Orbison has already sent chills up your spine with his own Running Scared, the most sensible option is to make them sound like Jeff Lynne songs. So break out the muddy, metronomic backbeats and the multiple guitar overdubs and celebrate. Lynne doesn’t limit his trip down memory lane to the pre-rock n’ roll era. Apart from Orbison’s pocket opera, Chuck Berry’s Let It Rock and Don Covay’s Mercy Mercy are tossed into the mix, sounding right at home. The whole thing could have been a pointless exercise in the wrong hands, but Lynne brings enough unpretentious charm to the project to make it endlessly endearing. No one can touch Bobby Darin on Beyond the Sea, for example, but Lynne’s joyous version actually brings something to the table. (SOURCE: Montreal Gazzette)
