May 19, 2023:
👉Benedict Cumberbatch will play legendary folk musician Pete Seeger in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic.
The film, titled Complete Unknown, is directed by James Mangold and stars Timothée Chalamet as Dylan. In an interview with Deadline, Mangold confirmed Cumberbatch’s casting as Seeger. Seeger had a significant impact on Dylan’s musical upbringing. As a young aspiring folk musician, Dylan drew inspiration from Seeger’s music and activism. In turn, Seeger was an early backer of Dylan, helping to facilitate his debut album with Columbia Record. He also invited Dylan to play at Newport Folk Festival (where Seeger served as a board member).

“Until tonight, the most underrated singer/songwriter and live performer of our time has been Bob Seger. He is the beautiful loser who has sold 50 million records. Bob Seger has paid more dues than all the artists in the current
Billboard Top 40 combined. You can’t talk about Bob Seger and not mention the Midwest. Bob Seger’s music not only influenced me but taught me to be proud of where you come from. And I am. He set the bar for all singers and songwriters from the Midwest. Bob Seger is the voice of the working man and living proof of the American dream.” -Kid Rock; Induction of Bob Seger; Rock& Roll Hall of Fame; 2005

Feb 8, 2022: Acoustic Guitar: Remarkable ‘Samba in Seattle: Live at the Penthouse 1966–68’ from Bola Sete Trio Showcases Classical Guitar Influences
The great Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete (born Djalma De Andrade; 1923–1987) carved out a unique niche in the late 1950s in Brazil and the ’60s in the U.S., where he first gained renown playing alongside horn titan Dizzy Gillespie, then through a stint with pianist Vince Guaraldi. Along the way, he also established a career as a leader, fronting guitar-bass-percussion trios. Playing a nylon-string classical guitar, he was a masterful improviser, with influences that ranged from jazz guitarists Django Reinhardt, Barney Kessel, and Charlie Christian to Brazilian players including Laurindo Almeida, Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfá, and João Gilberto. His popularity was both fueled by and fed the worldwide intertest in samba and bossa nova during that era.

👉Billboard reports that Blake Shelton is preparing for his swan song on The Voice, as he wraps 23 seasons of being a coach on the singing competition. Reba McEntire is gearing up to take his place starting in season 24, and Shelton has no doubts that she will make a fine replacement. I have never watched a complete show and have just seen clips here and there. Never a fan of Shelton after he traded off Miranda Lambert. Hard to believe its been on for 23 years.

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE
Dynamite! The Collection
SONY, 2011
I just love Sly & The Family Stone. I love all the voices, the songwriting, the arrangements, I love that you cannot stop yourself from moving or dancing or at least tapping your foot. Sometimes you can be in a very dark place – you put on music, and like magic, you’re moving your hips, you’re singing, you’re dancing, you’re uplifted. Their music works that way. There’s no way that those musicians weren’t having a blast [in the studio] and it’s like they bottled the joy and they bottled the energy. I always think of music as my drug: if you’re down, it’ll just snap you right out of it.

👉The Cleveland-based Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced the 2023 inductees. The Spinners were among about a dozen acts that made the cut. The one-time Motown act formed in Ferndale in the 1950s. Dec 30, 2022: Acoustic Guitar: Woodshed: How To Play John Fahey’s ‘Uncloudy Day’
“Uncloudy Day” is an 1879 gospel song by the Reverend Josiah Kelley Alwood, who was inspired by the sight of a rainbow, backed by an enormous black nimbus cloud in an otherwise clear sky, greeting him on the final leg of a long homeward-bound journey. It has been covered by many performers, including the Staple Singers, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Doc Watson, to name but a few, and here we’re going to talk about John Fahey’s instrumental interpretation for solo steel-string guitar.
