Bob Woodward blasts Washington Post for ending presidential endorsements
Journalist Bob Woodward, best known for his coverage of the 1960s Watergate scandal, criticized his former employer, the Washington Post, for not endorsing either candidate in the 2024 presidential race. The announcement of this non-endorsement came less than two weeks before Election Day. The Washington Post had issued its backing to candidates since the 1980s. This week, owner Jeff Bezos announced that tradition is over, joining the Los Angeles Times and USA Today in opting not to support Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump. “I really disagree,” Woodward said on Tuesday’s episode of ABC’s The View. “The Post thought, it has a news side and an editorial side. It’s one institution. During Watergate — can I go back 50-plus years to talk about? When Carl Bernstein and I wrote stories that were denied, the Washington Post editorial department stood squarely behind us all of the way.”

CNN’s Jim Acosta pushed back after a Republican guest tried to pass off the widely denounced rhetoric from former President Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally as nothing but bad comedy. While speaking on Monday to Lance Trover, a former spokesperson for North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum’s presidential campaign, Acosta asked if it was “a good idea” to feature a slate of speakers who let loose a rash and vulgar speeches — some of which included racist tropes — during the New York City MAGA gathering. While there were several speakers who targeted migrants and immigration, it was comedian Tony Hinchcliffe who delivered some of the worst of it with bigoted remarks about Puerto Ricans, Jews, and Black people. For the first time in decades, The Washington Post will not endorse a candidate in this year’s presidential election, the newspaper’s publisher announced Friday, a decision that sparked widespread outrage among the paper’s staffers. “The Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. The outlet came out with a story dedicated to apologizing for originally headlining, "Conservative editor-in-chief appears to use racial slur to refer to Haitian migrants" after Lowry, who even addressed the word mix-up prior to the story getting drafted. In November of 1976, right after Rupert Murdoch bought the New York Post, he tasked James Brady with executing his broad concept for a full page of short news items filed by a variety of contributors and edited with a consistent, and consistently cheeky, voice. Brady and a few stringers quickly pulled together what Brady named Page Six because that’s the page where the column initially ran. Nearly 50 years after its debut, Page Six is the only gossip column still standing among those it competed with back then. It is also the most successful original brand to emerge from the Post, as well known as the paper itself; in the past week alone, Page Six appeared in an answer on Jeopardy! and figured into a plot line on Only Murders in the Building. Technically, they did endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, and they do tout the many reasons why Harris is their pick. But, mostly, they’re endorsing Harris because she happens to be the one running against Trump. The Times editorial board started right out of the gate by blasting the former president, writing, “It is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States than Donald Trump. He has proved himself morally unfit for an office that asks its occupant to put the good of the nation above self-interest. He has proved himself temperamentally unfit for a role that requires the very qualities — wisdom, honesty, empathy, courage, restraint, humility, discipline — that he most lacks.”

On Tuesday morning, the Fox News host previewed the evening’s vice presidential debate between Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance by urging her X followers to buy gold and silver from her sponsor in order to avoid “a potential Harris/Walz disaster” to their personal finances. Laura Ingraham linked to a dedicated landing page featuring her endorsement of GoldPro, a precious metals investment company whose right-wing sponsors have included Ingraham’s Fox colleague Sean Hannity and Stew Peters, a white nationalist and antisemitic streamer who has called for the execution of journalists. Ingraham’s LauraLikesGold.com testimonial states that “our current Administration has done nothing to make the lives of everyday American families better,” citing factors like “Rising Inflation,” “Increasing National debt,” and “a looming recession.” “Will it ever get better?” she added. “Expert analysts are not hopeful, which is why I encourage you to learn how gold and silver can be a great way to hedge against these economic factors eating away at your nest egg.” It is certainly amusing that in exchange for money, Ingraham is warning her audience both that former President Donald Trump may lose the 2024 presidential election and that even if he wins, his economic performance will prove so poor that they need to buy gold and silver as a hedge. But Ingraham’s paid missive both defies what economists and other experts say about the relative merits of the plans put forward by Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump, and provides a stark example of how right-wing pundits enrich themselves on the backs of their followers.
