From one songbird to another: Harry Styles is paying tribute to late Fleetwood Mac musician Christine McVie, who died Nov. 30 at 79.
The "As It Was" singer, who is currently on the Latin America leg of his Love on Tour, honored McVie by performing an emotional cover of the band's 1977 track "Songbird" during his concert at the Estadio Bicentenario de La Florida in Santiago, Chile, on Thursday night.  -Watch Harry Styles pay tribute to Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie with 'Songbird' cover at Chile concert 12.2.22

It was strange enough being in Christine McVie’s flat – high up and hovering over a stretch of the River Thames in Battersea with an upright piano in the corner of the room (oh, to be her neighbour). But it was stranger still hearing what she had to say. As we sat together on her light grey sofa in December 2013, McVie told me how she had left Fleetwood Mac in 1998 thinking that she wanted a quiet life in the Kent countryside with her dogs and Hunter wellies. But that hadn’t been what she had wanted at all. Fifteen years on, McVie was restless, isolated, a little lonely … and wouldn’t it be nice if she could be back playing with the band? “If they were to ask me, I would probably be very delighted,” she ventured nervously.  -‘I would probably be delighted’ – how Christine McVie opened up about wanting to rejoin Fleetwood Mac 12.2.22

Christine McVie
July 12 1943 - November 30, 2022

Christine McVie was raised in the West Midlands of England, learning music from a young age. While studying at Birmingham’s Moseley School of Art, she joined the short-lived group Sounds of Blue. The band morphed into the blues outfit Chicken Shack, featuring McVie (known at the time by her maiden name, Christine Perfect) on vocals and keyboards. McVie performed on the band’s first two albums, 1968’s 40 Blue Fingers Freshly Packed & Ready to Serve and 1969’s O.K. Ken?

By that time, she had wed John McVie, bassist for the English blues-rock unit Fleetwood Mac, then led by guitarist and founder Peter Green. She appeared on the band’s sophomore album “Mr. Wonderful” (1968) and on Green’s last record with the group he founded, “Then Play On” (1969). The couple sadly divorced in 1976. She went on to marry keyboardist Eddy Quintela in 1986, and they went their separate ways in 2003.

McVie, who sang on classic hits like "Everywhere" and "You Make Loving Fun," joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970, and played alongside her then-husband John McVie.

McVie lasted through the many lineup changes of the group, and wrote and sang some of the band's biggest hits, including 1975's "Over My Head" and "Say You Love Me," as well as the "Rumours" tracks "Don't Stop" and "You Make Loving Fun." Later tracks included "Hold Me" from "Mirage" and "Little Lies" from "Tango in the Night." All those songs featured cleanly defined, easily sung melodies, with hints of soul and blues at the core. Her compositions had a simplicity that mirrored their construction. “I don’t struggle over my songs,” Ms. McVie told Rolling Stone in 1977. “I write them quickly.”

In 1998, McVie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Fleetwood Mac, and received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. The same year, after almost 30 years with the band, she opted to leave and lived in semi-retirement for nearly 15 years. She released a solo album in 2004.

Sept 19, 2013: Fleetwood Mac News: The 10 Greatest Christine McVie-Led Fleetwood Mac Songs

In wonderful news, Stevie Nicks recently revealed that her close friend and fellow lead songstress Christine McVie would be rejoining Fleetwood Mac for one song at two of their shows on the European leg of the band's reunion tour. McVie left in 1998 and, for Fleetwood fans, the news is not only surprising but more than welcome as the band is even better when including the rich tonality of balladeer and multi-instrumentalist McVie. The singer left the band largely due to a fear of flying that inhibited her ability to travel on tour and Fleetwood Mac has gone on to reunite several times after her departure despite missing the unique dynamic the prized third vocalist.
